Floor
There are a thousand and one ways to make a good floor, and this from the simplest and most economical to the most sophisticated and elaborate, or in the most heterogeneous recoveries as in first-choice noble materials “handpicked” !
However, all valuable floors have one thing in common: they must be mounted “out-of-water”, ie on this famous “crawl space” which is in fact nothing else than a void space between the earth and the floor frame which puts the building away from moisture from the ground and therefore mold.
To achieve this, we commonly use studs stone or wood, 20 to 30 cm high. We often see floors “on stilts”, great solution for all slopes.
But even a floor made of recovered pallets (eg in traditional areas) is completely satisfactory. In this case, the “crawl space” necessary to keep the whole healthy is reduced to only 10 to 12 cm, but that is perfectly the case, even it is not the ideal.
Floor Size
Another thing that is good to specify, because it is a recurring question, it is the diameter of the floor compared to that of the Yurt. The floor must have exactly the same diameter as the yurt and this for technical reasons.
It is necessary that the bottom of the wall cover falls over the edges of the floor to ensure a perfect seal. Otherwise the water would run down the walls to infiltrate under the tarpaulin, running on the platform, soaking the inner fabric and the felt while looking for a path in the middle of the yurt by simply following the sense of gravity … because even the most accomplished floor is never perfectly flat, even if it seems so with the naked eye.
So it is better to let the cover of the walls to generously evacuate all this water because, in a single day of consistent rain, tons of water can fall, flows that must be properly evacuated out to get lost in the Earth.
Ideally, the ground should be as flat as possible, laid out beforehand and sufficiently clear around so as not to be disturbed during the assembly.
Have your floor built
For all those who do not have the courage or the necessary handyman’s fiber, we offer well-finished, dismountable and therefore mobile floors, which goes against the spirit of the Yurt whose Spirit is the one Freedom of movement, at least in potentialities.
Several Craftsmen Cooperators, specialized in the subject and grouped according to the regions, are at your disposal, with prices and variable finishes but always according to the same principle: a removable floor of 10 to 14 parts, blades of parquet 21 pine mm mounted on a solid wood frame Douglas type (Red Pine).
These craftsmen are based either in the Aude, Cevennes or Limousin.
For example, prices can range from € 2,000 to € 2,700 for a floor 6 meters in diameter, excluding laying and transport.
